Visual Arts at Stanley

Visual arts reflects Stanley's British Primary approach to learning. Students learn through active exploration, first-hand experience, choice and reflection.
Teachers introduce materials, techniques, artists and design concepts while giving children room to experiment, solve problems and develop ideas of their own. As students grow, technical skill and artistic independence grow with them.
Pre-Kindergarten Through 8

Pre-K through 2
Explore & Make
Young artists investigate color, line, shape, form and materials through drawing, painting, building and hands-on making. Open-ended experiences invite curiosity, choice and creative problem-solving.

Build & Connect
Students deepen their understanding of the elements of art and principles of design, study artists past and present and make connections to Social Studies and Science while expanding their technical skills.
Middle School
Experiment & Express
Middle School artists explore historical and contemporary art, experiment with increasingly varied media and build skills in collaboration, planning and independent artistic decision-making.
Process Matters
The finished piece is only part of the learning.
Visual arts gives students repeated opportunities to experiment, make choices, work through problems, respond to feedback and revise ideas. Over time, those experiences become a creative toolbox students can draw from independently.

Pre-K through K/1/2 Art
Chris Lewis
Chris introduces Stanley's youngest artists to the possibilities of materials and making. Through hands-on exploration, students experiment with ideas, solve creative problems and build confidence in their ability to make something uniquely their own.
3/4/5 Art
Aya Schickel
In Art with Aya, students create projects using a variety of materials and methods, often based on the work of current and past artists. They explore the elements of art and principles of design, with projects sometimes connecting to 3/4/5 Social Studies or Science.
Most importantly, students enjoy being creative in a safe and supportive environment.
Middle School Art
Erin Gilroy
Middle School artists explore historical and present-day art, experiment with new materials and techniques and build skills in collaboration and planning. Projects may involve charcoal, spray paint, green-screen moviemaking, plaster and other media.
By 8th grade, students draw from a growing toolbox of techniques, approaches and materials as they pursue increasingly complex, independent projects that are meaningful to them.
